Christian Discipleship

16th Sunday In Ordinary Time

According to the Book of Genesis, the work of creation took God six days and on the seventh day He rested. When God gave the Ten Commandments, he made sure to include a rest day, the Sabbath Day. In today’s Gospel Jesus invites his disciples to come away to a deserted place and rest a while. Jesus himself recognizes the need for rest and prayer in the midst of hectic work.

But there are some things in life that you can never get away from, some things from which you can never take a holiday! And certainly, one of these is our Christian discipleship. When Jesus saw the crowd, he felt compassion for them and attended to their needs. Through this incident Jesus teaches us that we can never get away from the demands of our calling in life. There is no getting away from God-given mission, instead, that should be our priority.

How well do we balance the need for rest without compromising the demands of our Christian discipleship?
