Jesus gave us a new Commandment, “Love one another as I have loved you.” Love is the foundation of all the Ten Commandments. Jesus loved us with a self-sacrificing love. Out of love, He died for us on the cross. There is no greater love than that. Every Christian is identified by the way we love. How much should we love others? St. Francis de Sales says, “the measure of love is to love without measure.”
Jesus is teaching us tough love. It is not limited to those who love us back, but it should include also those who hate us, those who do harm to us because of our faith in Christ. When this happens, we Christians will stand out as
different from the rest of the world. We win over our enemies not through revenge or retaliation but through forgiving love! This requires a lot of courage and sacrifice. “This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” This vision of God for all people has been revealed by the Book of Revelation, “The old order has passed away, behold, I make all things new.” Are we ready to make a difference in the world as Jesus did?
