5th Sunday of Easter
The parable of the Vine and the Branches is one of the very important parables of Jesus in the Gospels. Rightly so, we have chosen this parable as the theme of our SJN Parish Logo! Jesus is the Vine and we are the branches. Jesus invites all to be connected to him in order to be nourished spiritually and bear fruit.
There is a need for children to be rooted to their parents and be pruned and groomed, so that they would bear good fruits when they grow up. Jesus says in the Gospel, I am the vine and my Father is the vine grower. He prunes every branch so that they bear more fruit. Both children and adults, everybody needs some pruning and shaping so that we can be our best.
St. Paul was able to accomplish much fruit for the Church among the gentile nations after his conversion because he allowed himself to be pruned by God. St. John tells us, “Those who keep the Commandment of God remain in Him and He in them. And the Commandment is this: we should believe in His son Jesus Christ, and Love one another.” (1 Jn 3:23-24)
Love is the mark of our relationship with God and with one another. Where there is genuine love, there is God, for God is Love.
