4th Sunday of Easter
Jesus says in today’s Gospel, “I am the Good Shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (Jn10:11) Jesus the Good Shepherd led the people by example. The sheep knew His voice, and they followed him. The history of the church is filled with shepherds suffering and giving their lives for their sheep. In truth, the Church has grown so much with the blood of the Martyrs. To this day, so many members of the Church throughout the world courageously follow their Good Shepherd Jesus even to the extent of accepting martyrdom.
Today is a special day of prayer for vocations to Priesthood and Religious life. There is a growing need for more men and women to take on the role of being good shepherds of the Church as priests, religious and lay leaders. There is a rich harvest in the church today, but we lack laborers. Let us “Pray therefore, to the Lord of the Harvest to send more Laborers into the Harvest.” (Mt.9: 38).
Imitating Jesus as our model, we are called to be shepherds to one another, as parents in our families, and as leaders in our communities. Let us ask, “How can I participate more closely in the work of shepherding God’s children?”
