Importance of Forgiveness
The Gospel parable for this Sunday teaches us that our God is willing to forgive us provided we are also willing to forgive others. This teaching is so important that Jesus incorporated it in the Lord’s Prayer, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” The Book of Sirach says, “Forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray your own sins will be forgiven.”
No other religion has stressed the importance of Forgiveness as Christianity does. No other prayers give importance to forgiveness as the Prayer “Our Father” taught by Jesus himself. Forgiveness is nothing less than the way of Christ. If we are to follow Christ then it must become our way as well. “Not seven times, but I tell you, seventy times seven.”
Forgiveness is a decision. Decide today to forgive. Forgiveness does not take away painful memories, but it means not acting out of them. It frees you from being controlled by the one who hurt you.
