"You are the Christ, Son of the Living God"
How mysterious are the ways of the Lord! From today's readings, we perceive the depth of the riches, wisdom and knowledge of God. We come to the realization that the judgments of God that were unsearchable and mysterious at the time of their occurrence were made known in time as they unraveled themselves.
In the 1st reading from Isiah, we hear God announcing His plan to remove the wicked leader Shebna, and replace him with his servant Eliakim by giving him the key of authority to the House of David. In the Gospel, we see the mystery surrounding Jesus’s identity being revealed when Peter declares, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”
Jesus gave Peter the authority to lead the Church and entrusted him with the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Why did Jesus choose Peter of all the 12 Apostles? Simply because only Jesus could see the goodness of this man beyond his human weakness. There has been always an element of mystery surrounding the election of the Popes, the successors of Peter. God surprises us by choosing the leaders whom He wants, and He empowers them to lead the Church. As long as they continue to rely on Jesus, they will be able to sail and steer the “bark of Peter” to harbor.
