Not Giving Up
For Jesus, what is important is our Faith. He came to save both the Jews and the Gentiles. In today’s Gospel, Jesus praises the faith and perseverance of the Canaanite woman and heals her daughter. In our 2nd reading, St. Paul tells of the Salvation of the Gentiles. Isiah in the 1st reading speaks of Foreigners entering the house of God. God’s compassion extents to all, including the gentiles.
Jesus was saddened by the 'lack of faith' of his own fellow Jews and the 'little faith' of his own disciples (Mk 6:6). But he is struck with admiration at the great faith of the Canaanite woman. How many times have we prayed for something earnestly, something very dear to us, and God seems to have ignored us or refused us? We turn our back on God and quit praying or going to Church thinking God just doesn’t care about me. Jesus has insisted on many occasions in the Gospel on the importance of perseverance in prayer and not giving up.
How persevering are we in our life of prayer?
